The Architecture Machine

Seminar - BSc./MSc.

Class

Based on the exhibition "The Architecture Machine", which opens on 14 October 2020 at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the seminar will focus on the role of the computer in architecture. The exhibition traces both the history of technology and presents pioneering works of computer architecture.

The seminar focuses on recent architectural history as the technological and cultural history of the digital. The seminar will show how digital thinking has led to new approaches, methods and results in design.

As with all cultural technology, we are also in dialogue with the methods of computational design; they challenge our creativity and shape our intuition.

In the course of the semester, texts and protagonists are discussed together and presented in lectures. Readings include architectural historians such as Mario Carpo, architects such as Greg Lynn and pioneers of German cybernetics such as Max Bense and Frieder Nake.

The seminar does not require any previous digital knowledge and is aimed at all those who have an interest in our future relationship to technology.

Notes:

German and English texts are expected to be read and discussed. Output is either an essay or a contemporary technological implementation of early computer architectures.
