Voxel Living Environments

Studio Project – MSc.

Class

The dMA department's tectonic interest in small building blocks applied towards a high-resolution architecture and circular building economy will be concretised this semester in a large design for transformable housing typologies. The knowledge and methods for constructing and designing with these building blocks/voxels that have been built up in the department will be concretised architecturally in this project. The programmatic focus on housing typologies is also linked to the question of human movement patterns and ergonomics.

The VR software VRoxel, developed in the department, is the central design medium. It allows millions of building blocks to be placed intuitively and 3D scan data of the environment and movement data of users to be integrated as a design context. The use of this medium is also suitable for students who have not yet acquired expertise in parametric design. Basic knowledge of Rhinoceros-3D/Grasshopper is helpful but not a prerequisite. Assistance with special in-depth digital methods is provided in tutorials.

Supervision takes place in weekly corrections and two colloquia in the faculty. In addition to technical support, some text on the conceptual classification of the project will be handed out and discussed.
