“In visual perception a color is almost never seen as it really is — as it physically is. This fact makes color the most relative medium in art,” Josef Albers writes in the forward to his book Interaction of Color (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1963). What do we know about color, about how we see color? Are color fans or colors on a screen enough to help us select color schemes for buildings and rooms? Can we see color better if we know theories and systems of color? Design and creation in general is like sports: knowing the rules of tennis is a far cry from being able to play tennis. For conscious perception of color and for creative use of color too, it is not enough to know color schemes. The sensual, practical experience of seeing color, together with the mixing and combining of colors, is essential. In practical exercises, we’ll collect color experiences: we’ll follow, among others, the Interaction of Color by Albers, blending paint, developing examples of shade progressions and color relationships—neighboring and contrasting, composing with color. The experiences will ultimately lead to the production of an individual color work.
