Xylographic Processes

Elective module

Course

The term xylography comes from the Greek words xylon (wood) and graphein (to write), and until the 19th century it was a common term for printing with wooden panels, now called “woodcuts.” The woodcut is a high-pressure technique: relief-like parts are cut or carved out of a wooden panel. The remaining raised bridges and surfaces of the so-called printing block are colored and imprinted on paper. The print may remain monochrome or multiple colors can be printed over or next to each other. The printing block does not necessarily have to be carved. Several individual wooden parts can also be combined to form a printing block: growth patterns and wood grain can thereby be integrated into the artistic composition. As a relief, a printing block can also comprise a work in itself. We will collect and work with various kinds of wood and paper and experiment with printing inks. Since this technique does not require a printing press, “Xylographic Processes” will be held in the sculpture workshop.
