Notes in Stone

Elective module

Course

Petroglyphs are messages from a time long past. The creation of rock carvings, some of them as much as 3000 years old, required great effort, so that one must assume that their creation held an important cultural and religious meaning for those who produced them. But more recent history also holds examples of mundane messages, such as the diary of a ship’s crew from the skerry of Hauensuoli. In his photo montages from the work group Mountains, the contemporary artist Wim Delvoye plays with the dichotomy between casual notes and the weighty technique of “carving into rock.”

In addition to learning the practical craft of carving writing and reliefs, in the seminar “Notes in Stone” we will devote ourselves to the question of how casual a message in stone can be, whether contemporary graphic modes of expression can be carved in stone, and what the effect of this might be.

Participation in this course requires bringing and wearing work clothes, steel-toed safety boots, a dust mask (at least particulate filter P2- oder FFP2), and safety goggles.
