…we just want to play

Elective module

Course

“…he just wants to play.” Everyone who has unexpectedly been jumped on by a dog and reacted with shock has heard this sentence from the two-legged companion in question.

Harmless game or serious aggression?

During the Cold War, the military sought advice from game theorists in order to play through response options to the enemy’s next suspected move. Chess was originally a war game used to train military leaders.

In the field of tension between impulsive action and strategic planning, between coincidence and regularity, we will deal with the artistic transformation of selected aspects of play.

Any game needs rules. “A game is basically an algorithm,” Peter Weibel once said.

With this in mind, we will use exercises to develop artistic works, each with specific rules of play. We’ll begin with the color-graphic design of “playing surfaces,” dealing for example with dice as the elementary solid object of many games. After an interlude concerned with various short games, the central group project of the semester will again focus on an elementary game object: we will build a ball run, in which individual design ideas can be played out in the context of an overall concept.
